Sovereignty Continues Reign With Travers Romp
Dispatching longshot Bracket Buster in early stretch, Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Sovereignty drew off to a dominant victory in the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 23 at Saratoga Race Course.
He became the first horse since Thunder Gulch in 1995 to accomplish the Derby/Belmont/Travers Triple.
Bracket Buster held second, no match for the winner, but well clear of Magnitude in third.
Sovereignty, who rated in fourth place in the early running of the Travers, advanced to third on the second turn before overhauling the leading duo of Magnitude and Bracket Buster. The Bill Mott trainee, Godolphin’s homebred 3-year-old son of Into Mischief , raced 1 1/4 miles on a fast track in 2:00.84 under regular rider Junior Alvarado. He paid $2.60 to win.
