“Indian players have the potential to beat anyone” – WTA 115 Leolia Jeanjean

Mumbai, 6th February 2026: Third seed Leolia Jeanjean, currently ranked World No.115 in Women’s Singles, continued her strong showing at the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series after progressing to the quarter finals, marking her first victories of the 2026 season at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA). The 30-year-old French player, who broke into the top 100 last year, spoke positively about the conditions in Mumbai and potential in Indian players as she reaches the business end of the tournament.
In addition to her singles campaign, Jeanjean is also competing in the doubles draw this year, partnering with Switzerland’s Naima Karamoko.
Leolia Jeanjean opened her Singles campaign against India’s Vaishnavi Adkar and spoke highly of the depth in Indian women’s tennis, having previously faced Sahaja Yamalapalli and followed the progress of Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi.
“I think India has really good players. Even last year I played Sahaja and I think she’s really good. Even Maaya has incredible potential. The quality of tennis is really high. They have the potential to play against anybody here and beat anyone. Maybe they just need to play more tournaments to be more consistent at this level” she said.
Reflecting on her tournament so far and the facilities provided by the MSLTA, she said, “I played two really good matches. Two days ago, it was my first win of the season, so I’m really happy. The conditions are good. I think people are nice and the organisation is really good. It has been a wonderful experience so far and I’m really happy with the way things are going.”
Leolia Jeanjean has been rapidly climbing the ranks over the last couple of years and has featured in the Main Draws of the French Open, US Open and Australian Open. One of the standout moments of her career came at the French Open in 2022, where she reached the third round and defeated Karolína Pliskova, her first victory over a top-10 ranked player.
The 30-year-old’s journey has been far from straightforward. She revealed that a serious knee injury at the age of 15, kept her away from professional tennis for several years. After undergoing surgery returned to the sport, but later moved to the United States where she competed at the university level. It was only at the age of 25 that she resumed playing professional tennis full-time.
Looking ahead, Leolia Jeanjean highlighted her goals from the tournament, she stated, “The goal is to be more consistent in these types of tournaments, try to break through and really try to be in the Top 70. It’s not easy, so the key is to keep a good mindset, be positive on court and enjoy the process, that’s the only way to feel happy and get good results.”
