Bhambri/Borges’ Miami Run Ends in Quarter-Final Thriller
The first-time pairing of Yuki Bhambri and Nuno Borges put up a strong fight at the Miami Open, but their run ended in the quarter-finals against 6th seeds Lloyd Glasspool and Henry Patten. The Indo-Portuguese duo fell in a nail-biting clash, 6-7(1), 6-3, [8-10].
Bhambri and Borges had an impressive tournament, stunning Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig in the first round with a dramatic comeback from 3-7 down in the match tiebreak to win 6-4, 3-6, [10-7]. This victory also saw Bhambri become India’s new No.1 doubles player, ending Bopanna’s 286-week reign.
In Round 2, they defeated Jamie Murray and Adam Pavlasek in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2, to reach the quarter-finals. Speaking after the match, Bhambri said:
“Every match at this level is tough. You have to go one at a time. Today was another tough one, but happy to pull it out in straight sets.”
On facing Murray, he added:
“Jamie is a veteran on the Tour. I’ve played him a few times—won some, lost some. When you’re playing with different partners, you just focus on your own game—serve better, return better, volley better.”
Bhambri also reflected on beating Bopanna in Round 1, calling it a tough moment:
“He’s someone I’ve always looked up to. He has helped Indian doubles players a lot, including me. It was close, just a few points away from losing, but I’m happy to keep going.”
With his third Masters 1000 doubles appearance and a strong Miami campaign, Bhambri continues to make his mark on the doubles circuit. He is set to reunite with his Dubai title winning partner Alexei Popyrin the upcoming Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on clay.
