In a remarkable upset at the W50 in Ahmedabad, India’s Anjali Rathi (WTA Rank 1399) delivered a stunning performance to defeat second seed Maria Kalyakina of Russia (WTA Rank 745) in the first round of the qualifying draw. Rathi secured a straight-sets victory, winning 7-6
(7-1), 6-2 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Despite entering the contest as a significant underdog, Rathi displayed resilience and tactical precision to overcome her higher-ranked opponent. The opening set saw both players struggling to hold serve, with Rathi ultimately prevailing in a tense tiebreaker, dominating 7-1.
