Baeza Impresses in Pennsylvania Derby Victory
There would be no denying classic-placed Baeza on this day.
Baeza, who settled for third in both the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) this spring, rated in seventh early, circled rivals in the far turn, took command from Goal Oriented in the stretch and drew off to a clear victory in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) Sept. 20 at Parx Racing.
Baeza defeated nine rivals in the test for 3-year-olds to secure his first grade 1 win. The son of McKinzie completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.03 on a fast track. Trained by John Shirreffs for owner C R K Stable and breeder Grandview Equine, Baeza was guided to victory by Hector Berrios.
Magnitude rallied late to claim second while Goal Oriented held third.
