Davis Cup: India to face Switzerland in Switzerland

India is set to face Switzerland in an away tie for the Davis Cup World Group I, scheduled between September 12 and 14. Switzerland, as the host nation, will decide the playing surface.
Switzerland’s singles lineup features World No. 121 Alexander Ritschard, No. 131 Jerome Kym, No. 165 and three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, and No. 172 Marc-Andrea Huesler. Their top doubles player is World No. 101 Jakub Paul. On the other hand, India’s highest-ranked singles player is World No. 132 Sumit Nagal, while World No. 39 Yuki Bhambri leads in doubles after Rohan Bopanna retired from team competition in 2023. However, both Nagal and Bhambri have been absent from recent Davis Cup ties.
India’s current Davis Cup squad, which defeated Togo 4-0 in a World Group I Play-off in New Delhi last month, included Mukund Sasikumar, Ramkumar Ramanathan, and Karan Singh in singles, while N. Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli formed the doubles team. Rohit Rajpal served as the non-playing captain. Meanwhile, Switzerland lost 1-3 to Spain in the Qualifiers.
Historically, India leads Switzerland 2-1 in Davis Cup matchups. Their last meeting was in 1993, when Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan helped India secure a 3-2 victory in Kolkata.
This upcoming tie is crucial, as the winning team will qualify for next year’s Davis Cup Qualifiers, while the losing side will have to compete in the World Group I Play-offs.
