DC vs RR: Why did Samson not bat after retiring due to injury? IPL rule explained
Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson retired hurt on 31 during his innings againt Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Samson suffered from a side strain and walked off the field during the sixth over of the innings. Rajasthan Royals had added 61 runs for the first wicket and needed 189 runs to win. Samson eventually did not return to bat.
According to the Indian Premier League Playing Conditions, the RR skipper could have resumed upon the fall of a wicket later in the innings. The rule 25.4.2 says, “If a batter retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his innings.”
His absence cost his side as the Royals could only tie the contest at 188 runs. In the Super Over, Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal batted for the side. RR scored 11 runs which the Capitals chased down in four deliveries to pick up a win.
