White Marlin, once a leading contender for the Melbourne Cup, has officially been retired from racing after a long layoff due to injury.

The striking grey captured the imagination of racing fans with his dominant performances and untapped potential.

“He had that X-factor,” said trainer Gai Waterhouse. “From the moment he walked into our stable, we knew he was something special. His presence, his movement—he was just electric.”

White Marlin’s career was abruptly halted following tendon injuries sustained during the Andrew Ramsden Stakes in May 2023. Though he never returned to the races, his legacy was already cemented.

“It’s always hard saying goodbye to a horse like this,” said co-trainer Adrian Bott. “But ultimately, his health and wellbeing are the priority. He’s given us so much joy, and we’re incredibly proud of what he accomplished.”

The imported galloper retires with an impressive record of 7 wins from 10 starts, including a standout victory in the 2023 Easter Cup that saw him rocket into Melbourne Cup calculations.

“He was shaping up to be one of the great stayers,” Waterhouse said. “It’s a shame we couldn’t see him at his peak in the Cup, but he still gave us memories we’ll never forget.”

Plans are now being made for White Marlin’s post-racing life, with discussions underway about how he might remain involved in the industry.

“We’ll make sure he gets the retirement he deserves,” Bott added. “He’s been a real favourite with the team, and we’re looking forward to seeing him enjoy the next chapter.”

For many, White Marlin will be remembered not just for his record, but for the excitement he brought to the track every time he lined up.

“He was the kind of horse people turned up early to see,” said one longtime fan. “You couldn’t miss him—big, bold, and brilliant.”
