Journalism Wins Haskell With Dramatic Rally

Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Journalism  mounted a sustained rally and caught Goal Oriented  and Gosger  near the wire to win the $1 million Haskell Stakes (G1) July 19 at Monmouth Park.

With regular rider Umberto Rispoli aboard, the heavily favored 3-year-old Curlin   colt was seventh in the field of eight the first time under the wire. He rallied four wide on the far turn and reached third at the head of the lane but still had work to do.

With Gosger and Goal Oriented battling on the lead, Journalism dug in and ran them down late to win by a half-length, going away. Gosger finished second, and it was a neck back to Goal Oriented in third.

Final time for 1 1/8 miles over the dirt track rated fast was 1:48.15. Trained by Michael McCarthy for owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, breeder Don Alberto Stable, and the Coolmore partnership, Journalism paid $2.80 to win.
