Lüthi: “We Have to Deliver a Bit More Tomorrow” After Switzerland Falls 0-2 Down
Swiss Davis Cup captain Severin Lüthi made no excuses following a bruising opening day against India, finding his team in a challenging 0-2 hole and facing a must-win scenario for the remainder of the tie.
After watching both Jerome Kym and Marc-Andrea Hüsler fall in straight sets during the opening singles rubbers, Lüthi offered a candid assessment of the day’s play.
“It’s obviously not the result we were hoping for,” Lüthi stated. “We knew that it’s going to be two tough matches.”
While acknowledging the deficit, Lüthi gave credit to the visiting team’s performance while placing the onus on his own squad to elevate their game. “I think they’ve [India] done a good job,” he said. “We have to deliver a bit more tomorrow to get back into the tie. It’s not going to be easy, but we have to be ready.”
The 0-2 scoreline leaves Switzerland in what the captain termed a “complicated situation,” now requiring the team to win three consecutive matches—the doubles and both reverse singles—to claim the tie.
When asked about his strategy heading into the decisive second day, Lüthi indicated that all options are on the table, suggesting potential lineup changes might be considered.
“We’re going to for sure talk some more,” he explained. “We prepared for that the whole week with different scenarios. It’s good that we have different guys who can also play the matches. So we’re going to check on the options and take a decision later.”
