Satono Reve Carries Hopes for Japan at Royal Ascot
Satono Reve, a 6-year-old horse by Lord Kanaloa , will try to become the first Japanese-trained winner at Ascot Racecourse in the Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ Jubilee Stakes (G1) June 21.
Although Japanese runners have performed well in international races in recent years, there has been no Japanese success at the Ascot in the United Kingdom. A few have fallen short in recent years—Agnes World, trained by Hideyuki Mori finished second to Nuclear Debate in the Kings Stand Stakes (G2) on the first day of Royal Ascot in 2000; and Heart’s Cry trained by Kojiro Hashiguchi finished third to Hurricane Run in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) in 2006.
Satono Reve, bred by Shirai Stud Farm, is a half brother to Hakusan Moon, who won three graded stakes in addition to finishing second in the Sprinters Stakes (G1) in 2013 and second again in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1) in 2015. He was bought by Hajime Satomi during the foal session of the 2019 JRHA Select Sale for $496,800.
Trained by Noriyuki Hori, Satono Reve has started 13 races and won eight of them, including the March 30 Takamatsunomiya Kinen. Most recently, he finished second to Ka Yin Rising in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (G1) at Sha Tin April 27. He was shipped directly from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom May 2, and has trained at Newmarket since.
