Shaikh’s “Bittersweet” Run in Loule Ends in Final, Set for New Career-High Ranking

Hibah Shaikh’s impressive run at the ITF W35 tournament in Loule, Portugal, concluded last week in a hard-fought final, but the American’s performance is set to vault her into a new career-high ranking.
Shaikh, who entered the tournament ranked 531st in the world, ultimately fell to South Korea’s Yeonwoo Ku, the world No. 302, with a score of 7-6, 6-3.
Despite the loss, the week marks a significant breakthrough. As a result of reaching the final, Shaikh is projected to break into the top-470 of the WTA rankings when they are released next week, a new milestone for the 23-year-old.
Reflecting on the final match, Shaikh acknowledged her opponent’s strength. “I mean, I put myself in a good position in the first set,” she said. “But, she played well on the set point, so what can I do?”
Shaikh maintained her strategy and perspective. “I just tried to play my game the whole time, and she was a better player today, so congrats to her and move on.”
The final result couldn’t overshadow what was a standout tournament for Shaikh, who surpassed her own expectations to reach the championship match.
“Yeah, it was a very good week,” she shared. “I did not expect to be here, so I’m happy I’m here.”
While the defeat was still fresh, Shaikh balanced the disappointment with pride in her achievement. “Of course, it’s still bittersweet,” she admitted. “It’s tough after a match, but it’s okay. I’m sure in one day I’ll be fine.”
Fans in Loule will be happy to hear she’s already keen on a return, stating she would “love to” come back next year.
