India, Tamil Nadu, October 25, 2025: There will be an all-Indian contest in the opening round of the singles main draw at the WTA Chennai Open 2025, with India No. 2 Shrivalli Bhamidipaty set to take on 16-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi.

Both players, teammates in India’s Billie Jean King Cup squad, have received wildcards into the main draw, ensuring at least one Indian presence in the second round of the WTA 250 event at the SDAT Tennis Stadium. India’s top-ranked player Sahaja Yamalapalli, meanwhile, has been drawn to face a qualifier in her first-round match.

Germany’s Tatjana Maria, the top seed, withdrew from the tournament due to injury, with Japan’s Nao Hibino taking her place in the draw. As a result, Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez moved into the top seed position and opens against Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova, while Britain’s Francesca Jones, seeded second, faces Frenchwoman Diane Parry.

Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic, seeded third, will begin her campaign against a qualifier, and 2022 Chennai Open champion Linda Fruhvirtova will meet Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in her first-round clash.

In doubles, top seeds Storm Hunter (Australia) and Monica Niculescu (Romania) have received a bye into the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Indonesian pair of Janice Tjen and Aldila Sutjiadi will open against their compatriot Priska Nugroho and her partner Sofya Lansere. As many as ten Indian players, including four all-Indian pairs, feature in the doubles draw, with Prarthana Thombare, seeded fourth along with her Dutch partner Arianne Hartono, leading the Indian challenge.

The qualifying rounds got underway on Saturday, with 20-year-old wildcard Vaishnavi Adkar giving home fans reason to cheer after posting a 7-5, 6-2 win over Amina Anshba to move into the final round of qualifying. However, Ankita Raina, Riya Bhatia and Diya Ramesh bowled out in straight sets.
