Vekoma Colt Tops Penultimate Session of September Sale
A colt by Vekoma from the family of Canadian champion Regal Intention sold for $220,000 to Mahmud Mouni to lead the Sept. 19 11th session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, which posted an 84% increase in total sales compared with last year’s corresponding session, with one day remaining in the auction.
The strong, Book 5B session came one day after the September sale surpassed cumulative sales of $500 million to become the highest-grossing Thoroughbred auction in history.
Almar Farm consigned Friday’s session-topping colt, who is a half brother to stakes winner En Hanse. His dam is the Mizzen Mast mare Izzy Izzy.
A total of 303 yearlings sold Friday, including post-ring sales, for a gross of $6,761,200, an average of $22,314, and a median of $15,000. The gross was 84% higher than the total of $3,673,000 from the 11th session last year when 209 horses were sold. The average was 27% higher than $17,574 in 2024, and the median was 25% above last year’s mark of $12,000.
With one day remaining in the September sale, Keeneland has sold 2,839 horses for a record $527,870,200, an average of $185,935, and a median of $90,000. The gross is 24% higher than at the same point last year when 2,683 horses had sold for $425,263,000. The average is tracking 17% above $158,503 in 2024, while the median stands 13% higher than $80,000 at this point last year.
In other Friday sales, a colt by Hard Spun out of a half sister to 2013 champion male sprinter Points Offthebench sold for $170,000 to Al Jawzaa General Trading. Consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent, he is out of Cafe Matcha, by Medaglia d’Oro .
A half brother to grade 3 winner Yes This Time by first-crop yearling sire Highly Motivated , out of a half sister to grade 2 winners Strike a Deal and Pacific Wind , sold to Stepaside Farm for $140,000. The colt out of Smart Jilly, by Smart Strike, was consigned by Rosilyn Polan (Sunday Morning Farm), agent.
Two horses sold for $120,000 apiece. Prestige Worldwide paid the amount for a filly from the first crop of grade 1 winner Cyberknife . Out of Arbanne, by Midshipman , she is from the family of grade 1 winner Condo Commando and grade 2 winner Yearly Report. Mulholland Farm, agent, consigned the filly.
Lee Rodgers purchased a filly by Dialed In for $120,000. Consigned by Legacy Bloodstock, agent, she is out of the winning Unbridled’s Song mare I’m So Fancy and from the family of 2020 Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Authentic along with group 1 winner Reynaldothewizard .
A filly from the first crop of 2022 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Mo Donegal sold to Leland Ackerley Racing for $100,000. Out of grade 3 winner Daring Kathy , by Wildcat Heir, she was consigned by Legacy Bloodstock, agent for Spendthrift Farm.
With sales of $728,000 for 31 horses sold, Machmer Hall Sales topped consignors Friday. The session’s leading buyer Olga Polushkina acquired nine yearlings for $236,000.
