Why was Shreyas Iyer reduced to tears during the 2025 Champions Trophy?

Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer revealed that a net session in Dubai during India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year left him in tears.

“The last time I cried properly was during the first practice session of the Champions Trophy because I could not bat well in the nets. I got angry and started crying. I had performed well in the England series [at home] and hence, I was expecting that I’ll continue in the same flow in the Champions Trophy,” Shreyas shared on Punjab Kings’ official podcast.

“But the conditions were different in Dubai, and adapting on the first day itself was quite hard. When the practice session ended, I wanted to do some extra batting, which I could not. Hence, I got very angry,” he added.

Despite the initial struggle, the 30-year-old had an outstanding tournament, finishing as India’s top scorer with 243 runs, including a crucial 48 in the final.

In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Shreyas has led Punjab Kings to two wins in three matches.
