WTA 250 Chennai Open: Player List Announced

India, Tamil Nadu, October 3rd 2025: Three years have rolled by since the last WTA 250 event was held in Chennai. Now, the Lake Area in Nungambakkam — particularly the iconic SDAT Tennis Stadium — is coming alive once again. A gentle breeze of excitement and anticipation fills the air as the second edition of the Chennai Open International Women’s Tennis Championship begins on Monday, 27th October 2025, with the curtains coming down on Sunday, 2nd November 2025, when the finals will be played.
The history of the Chennai Open began with the ATP 250 men’s event. It took a new direction in 2022, when the first WTA 250 edition – highest ever international women’s ranking event to be held in India- was successfully staged in the city. This year’s tournament will close the 2025 WTA circuit, with only the year-ending Masters in Turin to follow. Significantly, Chennai will host one of just three WTA events worldwide at this stage of the season.
The warmth of Chennai hospitality is evident from the fact that top players return year after year to showcase their talent — and this year is no exception. Last year’s winner, 20-year-old Linda Fruhritova of Czech Republic and last year’s runner-up Magda Linette of Poland are back, joined by the remarkable Tatjana Maria of Germany, a mother of two children. Players from 15 countries — spanning across continents— will compete fiercely, seeking crucial ranking points to prepare for the 2026 season.
Chennai will be honored to see in action Wimbledon semi-finalist 2024 and Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic of Croatia (World No. 69), along with Lulu Sun of New Zealand, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals with her never-say-die attitude. Rising stars featuring include 19-year-old Nikola Bartunkova (Czech Republic) and 21-year-old Maria Timofeeva (Russia). There 8 players from the top 100 and the cut off is world ranking 161 which makes it a very competitive tournament.
Indian representation in the main draw will be confirmed later. Players likely to be in the fray are Sahaja Yamllipalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and the Coimbatore teen sensation Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi amongst others.
The main draw consists of 32 players in singles – 23 direct entries, 1 special exempt, 4 qualifiers and 4 wild cards. The doubles draw consists of 16 pairs – 14 direct and two wild cards.
The WTA Supervisor will be Shu Chen while the Tournament Director is Hiten Joshi.
