Yuki Bhambri’s Historic US Open Run Ends in Tightly Contested Semifinal
New York, NY – India’s Yuki Bhambri and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus saw their remarkable run at the 2025 US Open come to an end in the men’s doubles semifinals. The 14th-seeded pair fought valiantly before succumbing to the sixth-seeded British duo of Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury in a thrilling three-set encounter, 7-6, 6-7, 4-6.
The semifinal appearance marked a career-best performance for the 33-year-old Bhambri at a Grand Slam and cemented his status as India’s top-ranked doubles player. In reaching the final four, he became only the fourth Indian man in the Open Era to advance to a Grand Slam doubles semifinal, joining the illustrious company of Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Rohan Bopanna.
Bhambri and Venus, who teamed up just a month before the tournament, showcased incredible chemistry throughout their campaign at Flushing Meadows. Their path to the semifinals was highlighted by a series of impressive victories over higher-ranked opponents. They notably stunned the fourth-seeded German pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the round of 16 and followed it up with a dramatic quarterfinal triumph over the 11th seeds, Nikola Mektic of Croatia and American Rajeev Ram.
In a tightly contested semifinal on the Grandstand, both teams displayed high-quality tennis with very few opportunities to break serve. After splitting the first two sets in tiebreakers, the experienced British pair secured a crucial break in the third set to seal their spot in the final.
Despite the loss, Bhambri’s performance at the US Open is a significant milestone in his career, especially after transitioning his focus to doubles following injury setbacks in singles. His deep run in New York is set to provide a significant boost to his world ranking and serves as a testament to his perseverance and skill on the doubles court.
